Green Meetings – Fashion or Future?

The core of a meeting, if we want to call it green is sustainability. The main goal should not be only to reduce a footprint and impact on nature and environment. What is truly a green meeting or green event should follow so called triple bottom line approach. With it we try to maintain the balance between environmental, social and economic concerns against business needs. That means that we do not make a simple event, nor that it has to have a number of limitations. It only means that we think twice: do we really need all those materials and what materials should we use.

And what are the benefits?

Easter, Slovenian style

Easter, in Slovenia called “Velika noč” (the Great night), is a Christian feast and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary as described in the New Testament (Wiki). In that time many ceremonies take place – from strictly traditional to more modern ones.

A great sample of a modern ceremony is blessing the motorcycles and motorcyclists, wishing them all the best on the road, as well as encouraging them to drive responsibly. The ceremony takes place in Mirna Peč (map), near the birthplace of great slovenian musician Lojze Slak and slovenian poet Tone Pavček. Saddly, both of them died last year so the ceremony was also dedicated to them both.  Read more »

Gregorjevo – when the birds get married

Just yesterday, on March 12th, we were celebrating so called “Gregorjevo” (which is impossible to say in english ;-) ). This is the original lovers’ holiday in our land. It is named after St. Gregor (George), who is known as the one who brought the light on the first day of spring. Originally Gregor (George) the Great, later St. Gregor (George), born around 540 A.D. in Rome, was considered an ideal pope and great spiritual teacher.

But March 12th is not the first day of spring. That is because the original celebration was dated on the Julian calendar, that was replaced with the George’s calendar in 1582, so the celebration moved on earlier date. By the way, the George’s calendar is named after pope George the XIII. and not after St. George!

Meeting geek – how iPad changed my meetings

Tomorrow is a big day for all Apple fans and for the competition too. On March 7th Apple is unveiling the third generation of iPad. The tablet mania spread in April 2010 when the trendsetter from Cupertino stormed through the market with the revolutionary iPad. For users of existing iOS devices this was a completely new experience, a new dimension. The success was refueled a year later in a typical Jobs manner.

Quickly new apps for meeting industry emerged. Some of them simply jumped from iPhone to iPad and some of them were developed just for iPads. Meeting and conference attendees now massively use these tools to interact with peers or monitor the lecturer. You can get your meeting app. However, I will sometimes stick to pre-installed apps for presentation such as Mail, Notes, iBooks and iTunes. And why not, they are easy to use, clear and instant. Another way to easily take minutes of the important meetings is a QuickVoice® Recorder, incredibly useful for briefings with concise information, later conveyed to my team. I have to admit, I’m way too lazy to take  notes, so I use my camera to take photos of the flipchart or my neighbour’s notes. Thank you, all the publishers who integrated MICE magazines into the apps. Thank you Events, M&C, Incentive, Successful meetings, Cim and my favourite Kongres. Thank you for all the sleepless nights.

I know for sure one app will change my presentation at trade shows forever. It will begin with IMEX 2012 and successfully continue our story. You will not find this app in App store or Android market. Welcome to Frankfurt!

Plant yourself a tablet and your meetings will become greener.

How do you call apple in Slovenian? -> jabolko [yabowko] :-).
